Below are detailed charts and statistics highlighting the IPv4 transfers in 2023. These figures are drawn from data reported by all Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) — ARIN, APNIC, RIPE, LACNIC and AFRINIC. The statistics focus on transfers of unused IP addresses and exclude those resulting from mergers and acquisitions. Additionally, this article includes historical data to offer a perspective on the variations in the market over the years.
Total number of IPv4 transfers in 2023
In 2023, there were 7615 IPv4 transfers, an increase compared to the 6263 transfers in 2022.
Month-wise IPv4 transfers
The highest number of transfers occurred in December (892), followed by October (863) and March (839). The least activity was observed in January, with only 402 transfers.
Regions with the highest number of transfers
As the graph shows, RIPE had the highest number of unused blocks transferred (5296) followed by ARIN (1628) and APNIC (1014).
Inter-RIR transfers
RIPE had the highest number of inbound transfers (transfers from other RIRs) at 336, followed by the ARIN (98) and APNIC (43)
ARIN had the most outbound transfers (transfers to other RIRs) at 234, followed by the APNIC (159) and RIPE (79)
Transfers by IP block size
In a shift from 2022, where /22 blocks were the most transferred, 2023 saw /24 blocks taking the lead, followed by /22 blocks.
Number of IPv4 transfers annually from 2017 to 2023
From 2017 to 2023, the highest number of transfers occurred in 2021 with a total of 8333. This was followed by 7615 transfers in 2023 and 6540 in 2020. On the other end of the spectrum, 2017 had the lowest activity in this seven-year period, with just 4565 IPv4 transfers.
Although 2017 saw the fewest block transfers, it recorded one of the highest volumes of IPv4 addresses transferred, with 109.03 million. The peak year was 2018 with 111.51 million, followed by 2020 with 83.33 million. Notably, 2023 marked the lowest in the seven-year span, with only 53.79 million IPv4 addresses transferred.
